there was powdered sugar there when I started these photos
This is a 5 star dessert! I have been waiting for this one! It's just one of the recipes that attracted me to Dorie's book Baking: From My Home to Yours. Please check out Upper East Side Chronicle by Lauren, she chose this week's TWD and she's got the recipe for ya!
I did mine a little differently with a twist on things. I used a loaf of Challah as suggested and a sprayed oval bake ware dish (probably smaller than 9×13 -held all the bread). I used 8 oz of Hershey's 60% dark chocolate, and…I used 2 C milk + 1 C hazelnut flavored liquid creamer plus the heavy cream it called for. Then I added in about 1/4 C sliced almonds and omitted the raisins. Baked it for about 50 minutes in a water bath. I've already noted this in my copy.

*This recipe happened to be a great budget helper for me. A couple of weeks ago, I found the Challah marked down as day old bread for .99 -just tossed it in the freezer for later use, found a few bags of the Hershey squares for $1 mark down, had a $1 off coupon for the creamer already on sale, the eggs were still on Easter sales and of course the nuts are always a deal at Trader Joe's! Oh, and the oval dish, another deal from Linens and Things when they closed down. I guess that makes this a 6****** dessert!
We ♥ this! Go check out the recipe, because I bet you will too! This is one I'd definitely make again! Thank you Dorie!
enjoy,
Glad you loved it! :)
ReplyDeleteNice job, looks beautiful! I am a fan on vanilla custard bread pudding, but I really liked this one too. It was even better drizzled with chocolate sauce or cream anglaise!
ReplyDeleteWow! Sounds like this whole recipe experience was a deal for you! It looks good and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteHow can you do this to me?! I am trying so hard to lessen my bond with chocolate. Then I look at this divine, yummy, delish bread pudding and my knees go weak and my pulse quickens! Thanks! Can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm Hazelnut must have added such a nice touch to this already great bread pudding! Great idea, Rachelle!
ReplyDeleteBread Pudding is definitely a money saver dessert but you really lucked out!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
I love the idea of the Hazelnut creamer.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea.
Great idea to substitute nuts for the raisins! I just left them out and it was a little boring without anything else in there.
ReplyDeleteI loved this one too! It was my first time making bread pudding and I know I'll be making it again. Yours looks perfect!
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing bread pudding a lot lately, but I've never even tasted it :) Looks good!
ReplyDeleteI'm so in love with your blog and being a foodie myself that wasn't hard to do! I started a new blog project called "Blog View" and I have done a post about your blog there: http://blogview09.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteSometimes these desserts taste just that much sweeter when you got a deal on the ingredients!
ReplyDeleteWait, hazelnut creamer in there too?!? That sounds amazing... Nuts sound wonderful in this too.
ReplyDeleteWow! Dorie is one of my favorites and this looks really decadent. Hazelnut and chocolate is one of my favorite flavor combinations too!

ReplyDeleteJust discovered your blog and opened it right up to this fantastic looking chocolate brad pudding, one of my favorites! I need to make one now!
ReplyDeleteYou have taken a great recipe, made it your own -- and taught us to make our own adjustments. Too often we're tied to exact duplication. Thanks for the incentive to take a recipe a step further and make it our own. Kudos to you, kiddo!!
ReplyDeleteI love what you did for so many reasons! I love how thrifty everything was, the additions (yum, hazelnut, and the presentation! So wonderful all around!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your recent win, too!
This looks so good! Hey, I read on SITS that you said it's 103 in So. Cal today. I am jealous. Seriously. It can never be too hot for me. I'll be in LA in two weeks. I hope the heat keeps up.
ReplyDeleteUgh I never found anything good at Linens & Things! Lucky you!
