My Grandma Hazel's Angel Food Cake



When my Grandmother Hazel was in school, she had an assignment to write recipes in a book, called Order Book. Inside her book was her signature and dated January 15, 1921. The photo shown above was taken sometime in 1921 at the age of 16. I recently received a CD of the copy of her Order book. Each recipe hand written and photo copied from her book. I acquired an angel food pan not long ago, and have been wanting to try my hand at making one. Then I came across My Grandmother's recipe. I knew I had to make it. The ingredients are below, it makes a much smaller in height size cake than other recipes, but tasted so nice. I paired it up with some fresh strawberries and peaches, cooked down to make a syrup. I would love to try a chocolate Angel Food cake sometime soon also!

Grandma Hazel's Angel Food Cake

8 egg whites
1 Cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
3/4 Cup all purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350'.
Sift flour and salt four times, set aside.
Beat egg whites until frothy. Add cream of tartar and continue beating until stiff.
Gradually add sugar to combine. Fold in flour and salt mixture. Add vanilla.
Pour into an ungreased angel food pan and bake in a 350' oven for 40 -50 minutes, or until it has risen and is golden in color.

For a Summery topping, top with sliced fresh strawberries and peaches. Slice fresh fruits and cook over medium heat until softened and juices have made a syrup. Let cool and serve over a slice of angel food cake.

I found another recipe on the CD, a recipe we love, Ham potato and carrot casserole. Which coincidentally was my first ever blogged recipe, 2 years ago today!

  10. What a wonderful post! I LOVE looking back at handwritten recipes from my grandma...I can almost remember the smell of her perfume and the touch of her hand. You are so lucky to have that great piece of history! I am going to give the recipe a whirl - I usually use a mix! Thanks for the touching post.

I have been giving my grandmother the "special project" of gathering her old recipes for me so I can post them to my blog. Baking is such a beautiful thing because it has the power to bring together multiple family generations!
