California Water H2O Challenge

Living in California, we know all to well the importance of water conservation. A couple of summers ago a restriction was put into effect because of the drought and we could not fill the kiddie pool to play, water our lawns as often, no driveway car washing, etc.  Places around town turned off their water displays to help conserve too. Many people changed their lawns to drought tolerant plants. Needless to say our yard went dead! Dried up grass turned into hay and eventually the yard was just boring, ugly dirt. Back when it would rain for a day or so, I'd put out buckets to catch rain water to help water plants throughout the week. Happily we've had a good few days worth of rain lately and our yard came back!! Just look at our fresh new grass that came back naturally!

The California Water H2O Challenge is FREE CA classroom competition teaching kids about caring for water. Teachers check it out!

The Cal Water H2O Challenge was designed in collaboration with the WestEd/K-12 Alliance to ensure an educationally sound curriculum that aligns with Common Core State Standards and is complementary to the Next Generation State Standards. Also developed with the North American Association for Environmental Education, their project-based learning model offers an effective and engaging manner to inspire students to community action while achieving curriculum standards.

About the Cal Water H2O Challenge

• Registration for the Cal Water H2 O Challenge ends on January 31, 2017.

• The students of participating classrooms initiate, develop, and implement a 4-8 week-long project (or longer at teacher discretion), focusing on caring for water. This class-based project explores water as a global resource and as a local resource, while tackling a local water problem in an individual and community-based endeavor.

• A handbook can be found in the resources section of challenge calwater.com, including a guide for the flow of the project, and sample lesson plans.

• Upon completion of the project, students create a final portfolio documenting their work. This portfolio, along with accompanying cover sheets, student reflections, and a teacher reflection, constitute the final submission. Submissions are due February 28, 2017.

• Curriculum Alignment:
Cal Water H2 O Challenge was designed in collaboration with the WestEd / K-12 Alliance to ensure an educationally sound curriculum that aligns with Common Core State Standards and is complementary to the Next Generation Science Standards. In aligning the curriculum, sample lesson plans were developed incorporating these guidelines.

• Project-Based Learning:
Developed with the help of the WestEd / K-12 Alliance and the North American Association for Environmental Education, the project-based learning model offers an effective and engaging manner to inspire students to get involved with community action while achieving curriculum standards.

• Objective Rubric:
Judging of the competition will be conducted by a panel of experts working in education and/or an environmental field and will use an objective rubric, developed with the help of the West Ed / K-12 Alliance. This rubric evaluates the water topic choice, project goals, action plan, and outcomes, long term benefits, integration with student learning and curriculum, student participation, impact on student learning, presentation, and impact on teacher practice.

General Mills Debuts New Cereals This Summer!

Peek-A-Boo! Thought I'd jump right back on here and see how things are going! Work is keeping me very busy lately so when I have some free time I may be writing another blog post.

As a blogger, General Mills likes to send out boxes of their cereal as a sort of Thank You, no strings attached. You may have seen some of my past goodies on my Instagram. Just thought I'd share them here too.

Well coming up for this summer, they have a few new varieties you may like! They contain no artificial flavors or colors from artificial sources and feature real ingredients, something they are doing to make their cereals even better.

First up would be one for me, Gluten Free! Strawberry Cheerios!! Oh yeah! I'll be hiding that one from the kids.

Then they have Tiny Toast in blueberry or strawberry flavors. How adorable are these!

For those who like a heartier cereal, they have Nature Valley Chocolate Oat Bites, Raisin Oat Clusters and as a snack idea, Maple Brown Sugar Granola.

Back To School with PlanetBox Lunchboxes: Review

It's almost Back To School for us so we're getting ready for homemade school lunches again! This is part one of three in which I'll share with you lunch ideas for our PlanetBox. I have shared some lunchbox ideas in the past so you may already know that my kids like a variety of foods to eat. I pack just a little of each to help satisfy them or to share with a friend.

PlanetBox are stainless steel segmented lunchboxes. They are high quality, eco-friendly, non-toxic, non-leaching, safe from BPA, phthalates, and lead, easy to clean and makes packing lunch easy and fun! They come in three sizes and styles to suit your needs. Be sure to customize yours with a fun bag and a choice of magnets and accessories!

If you need some inspiration for lunch ides have a look at theirs
Follow along with PlanetBox on Facebook and Instagram!

The Rover is designed perfectly for us who like wide variety of foods with smaller serving sizes. The Rover holds nearly 4.5 cups of food! Measures 10 x 7 x 1.5 inches.
Each Rover lunchbox includes 1 Big Dipper and 1 Little Dipper.

We chose the Rocket Red Carry Bag. I do recommend a flat cold ice pack (they do sell one as well) to fit into the sleeve of your carry bag.

PlanetBox is custom designed to fit all the foods your kiddos like. This specific one, the Rover, comes with 7 different compartments such as a "Little Dipper" container for your dips or sauces, a "Big Dipper" great for the messier items like pasta salad or yogurts or juicy berries or cut melon, a "Veggie" or "Fruit" section, a "Long" compartment for pretzels, crackers or nuts,  a "Main dish" section for your sandwich and of course the "Treat" space for a little something special like a small cookie, kiss or chocolate chips.

How about creating more personalization with assorted magnets for your PlanetBox? There are many different designs to choose from!

This is the Aloha magnet set

This is the Green Globe magnet set

Here is a sample of what my son would like to pack for his school lunch. He chose to have a PB & J sandwich thin, granola bar, raisins, celery & PB, cheesy whale crackers with pretzel sticks and fresh berries in the "Big Dipper" with an apple juice. I threw in a little kiss too.
