This week, Nancy of The Dogs Eat the Crumbs selected Swedish Visiting Cake for her TWD week. I'll be honest here, I saw this while flipping through recipes for my TWD pick, and thought how simple and non exciting it was, reminded me of a coffee cake. BUT after reading the P&Qs of it, I was very wrong! It was well received by other TWDers and being such a simple recipe (ingredients you probably already have!) how could I say no?
So for my cake I used orange zest, fresh from our tree, and upped the vanilla extract leaving out the almond extract. I baked it in my 9" Pampered Chef Deep Dish Pie Stoneware (that I found NEW at the swap meet for $3!).
It needed a longer bake time than suggested since my dish is a thick ceramic. Once it was done, it reminded me of a sugar cookie! Mr. commented on liking the crust, I loved the chewiness of the cake as well as the flavor. We all loved this so much it was gone fast! The orange was wonderful in it. I considered making another just so we can have another piece. This goes my Fave Dorie list!
Head over to Nancy's blog where you can get the recipe yourself, and see how wonderful this cake is!

The cake looks delicious! Oh, and I am jealous. You have an orange tree in your yard. All I have right now is one rhubarb plant. ;)
I used orange in mine as well. This one is a keeper!
That looks yummy!
Happy blogoversary :)
great color and perfect browning on yours. good job!!! such a nice edge, crisp and wonderful looking. I made MINI visiting cakes! fresh oranges... i envy you.
I left out zest all together but I'm thinking of using orange zest next time!! Your cake looks great!
Im glad you enjoyed this cake too. Your pictures are the best! I really loved this recipe!
Love the pan & such a steal too! The cake looks perfect!
Orange zest sounds better than lemon especially when you are fortunate enough to have the tree to take it from.
Beautiful plate, you have the slice on. Beautiful slice.
I've seen a couple other TWD bakers use orange zest and I have 3 blood oranges staring at me from my fruit bowl. I think I'm gonna have to bake up another Swedish Visiting Cake soon!

I bet it was fabulous with orange, but I'm a bit jealous that you have a tree in your yard! I loved this cake too, and will definitely be making another. Great photos:)
Your cake looks amazing - perfect crust and soft interior - I'd say that was $3 well spent! I'll bet the orange zest was good in this recipe; how wonderful that you can just pick an orange off the tree! The closest I can come is an herb garden, lol. Come to think of it, I did put herbs in the Yogurt Cake. Thanks for baking along with me this week.
What a steal that dish was! I'm jealous. :o) I loved the chewy texture, too. Just a great cake.
Aren't yard sales great? Your pictures are wonderful...the cake looks so yummy. How lucky to have an orange tree in your backyard. :)
I've gotten some of my best bakeware, best - meaning unique - at Goodwill. Nice job on the $3 purchase - it looks great. And the cake looks fantastic baked in it too - wasn't that just the best?
I bet this cake was fabulous with the orange, I'd love to try that sometime!
