Musselman's Applesauce, Simple Steps, Big Impact: Substitute Yourself Skinny: Cookbook Review

Musselman’s would like to help you to start 2011 by taking two easy steps that make a huge difference through their plan for a healthy New Year: Simple Steps, Big Impact!
They are kicking off the New Year once again by partnering with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. (The NBCF is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer through education and by providing mammograms for those in need.) Musselman’s understands the importance of early detection, and is hopeful that their partnership with the NBCF will encourage you to take this first Simple Step in improving your health by having a mammogram in 2011.

In the month of January, for every package of Musselman’s Natural and Healthy Picks Apple Sauce purchased, they will donate ten cents to the NBCF. Last year they reached $85,000, and they'd love your help spreading the word so they can reach an even higher amount this year! You can find more information about these efforts here.

And since good health starts with nutritious eating, Musselman’s Apple Sauce would like you to take a second Simple Step in 2011 by substituting natural apple sauce for the oil in your favorite baked goods. The result is great, moist taste with less fat and calories!

We were sent a 48 oz Musselman’s Natural Apple Sauce in their pink ribbon package, along with a wonderful recipe book entitled, “Substitute Yourself Skinny.” Written by famous chef Susan Irby, this book includes hundreds of simple substitutions to make your favorite recipes healthier, including using apple sauce instead of oil when baking.

Well, instead of more baking during Christmas, I decided to try a recipe from the book to go along with a favorite meal of mine, pork (roast) with yellow rice and black beans, and of course Susan's recipe for apple pear butter (applesauce). I have never made my own applesauce and this was just too easy! I loved this recipe and was happy I had some extra pears to use up.

Apple-Pear Butter
Anjou pears
Golden Delicious apples
water
fresh lemon juice
honey
