A Cheerios Circle of Helping Hearts Giveaway

This Giveaway is now closed.

I am happy to be able host this giveaway for my readers and help spread the word about the importance of women's heart health education with Cheerios Circle of Helping Hearts and MyBlogSpark.

Three of my lucky readers will have the chance to WIN a timeless freshwater pearl bracelet with a heart charm from Charity Charms!

Charity Charms donates a portion of the proceeds from its charms to various charities. By wearing the charm bracelet, you can show your dedication to raising awareness of women's heart health.

Do you know your cholesterol number? High cholesterol is one of the major
controllable factors for coronary heart disease, which is the number one cause
of death for women. A recent study conducted by Harris Interactive for Cheerios
found that more than one-third of adults (37%) have not had their cholesterol
checked within the past year.
Those with limited access to adequate health care may not get regular
cholesterol screenings and thus are at an even greater risk for heart
disease.

Wondering how you can help? Now through January 31, 2010, for every code
entered at
http://www.cheerioshelpinghearts.com/, Cheerios will donate $1, up to
$200,000, to raise awareness for heart disease and provide free cholesterol
screenings for women in need, through its partnership with Women Heart. Codes
will be featured inside specially marked boxes of Cheerios cereal.

For your chance to WIN 1 of 3 freshwater pearl bracelets, comment below with one of these answers and please leave your contact info*:

Here is a Great Recipe that is full of Whole Grains and Whole Wheat Bow Ties (head up, they are hard to find!)

Kasha and Bow Ties

Here's whatcha Need!
* 1 package bowties noodles (if you can get whole wheat, all the better!!!)
* Cooking Spray
* 1 large onion, finely chopped
* 2 cup kasha
* 1/2 cup egg beaters or 2 egg whites
* 4 cups Veggie Broth
* 1 teaspoon salt (I do not use)
* 1/4 teaspoon pepper (hahha... I use a ton.. I like it spicy!!)

1. Cook bowtie noodles according to package directions. Drain. Set aside.
2. In a heavy frying pan with a cover, heat cooking spray. Saute the onions (for approximately 5 minutes). Set aside.
3. In a bowl, beat the egg beaters. Stir the kasha into the egg so that all the kernals are coated.
4. Pour the egg-covered kasha into the frying pan. Fry over high heat, stirring, until the egg has dried and kernels are separate (for approximately 3 minutes).
5. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, or microwave bring 4 cups of broth to a boil.
6. Pour the hot liquid over the kasha. Add the onion and seasonings. Cover and simmer on low heat until all the liquid has been absorbed (for 25 minutes).
7. While the kasha is still warm, stir in the bowtie noodles.

You can add some fat free maragarine on top!
This is so Delish!!!

You are wonderful Rachelle! We all need these recipes and now we can share with one another. I can't wait to try that Cherry Vanilla Oatmeal!
My heart healthy recipe is
Mediterranean-style Grilled Salmon
4 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons lemon juice
4 salmon fillets, each 5 ounces
Cracked black pepper, to taste
4 green olives, chopped
4 thin slices lemon

Prepare a hot fire in a charcoal grill, heat a gas grill or your broiler.

In a small bowl, combine the basil, parsley, minced garlic and lemon juice.

Spray the fish with cooking spray. Sprinkle with black pepper. Top each fillet with equal amounts of the basil-garlic mixture.

Place the fish herb-side down on the grill. Grill over high heat. When the edges turn white, after about 3 to 4 minutes, turn the fish over and place on a small section of household aluminum foil. Move the fish to a cooler part of the grill or reduce the heat. Grill until the fish is opaque throughout & when tested with the tip of knife and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 145 F (about 4 minutes longer).

Remove the salmon and place on warmed plates. Garnish with green olives and lemon slices. This is from the Mayo Clinic and is one of our favorites. If Salmon is too pricey substitute Tilapia, it is just as good.

I have been working out and running to try to stay as healthy as I can. I have totally changed my family's diet and outlook on health. As well as trying to teach my children the why behind all this change.

I am always on the go so I need healthy food that quick, easy, and travels well. My heart healthy breakfast of choice is a smoothie.

1 cup of soft tofu
handful of frozen blueberries
handful of frozen strawberries
and a half cup of orange juice.

The best thing about a smoothie is you can always change the fruit to work with what you have on hand.

I love this Cucumber Pineapple Salad - i actually got it off the Mayo Clinic website, it's healthy and delicious!

1/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons water
1 cup fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch pieces
1 cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
1 carrot, peeled and julienne
1/3 cup thinly sliced red onion
4 cups torn salad greens
1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted

Directions

In a heavy saucepan, bring the sugar, vinegar and water to a boil. Stir constantly until reduced to about 1/2 cup, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and place in the refrigerator until cool. Add the pineapple. Cover and return to the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Add the cucumbers, carrots and red onions to the pineapple mixture. Toss well.

To serve, divide the salad greens among the plates. Top with the pineapple mixture and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

Thanks for offering this giveaway!

Oh my, what wonderful recipes for a healthy heart. I can't wait to try the cherry oatmeal. My recipe is for blackened tilapia.

6 tilapia filets
1 cup wheat flour
2 tbls cajun seasoning

You have to cook this in an iron skillet over your grill or you will have a house full of smoke.

Soak the fish in milk for 30 minutes. Then mix the flour and seasoning together. Dredge the filets in the flour mixture. This will give a light coating. Pour some olive oil in iron skillet and get the skillet smoking hot. Place filets in the skillet for about 1 minute or so on each side. This should brown pretty quickly. Enjoy.

I am slowly morphing our diet to better (and tastier!) things. We aren't tempted by the drive through windows because we have good food at home, which I make in batches and freeze so it's always ready. We eat a lot of oats, because we love them.

My cholesterol is so low my doctor raves about it.

I'm not living as healthily as I should -- but it's a growing awareness. I picked:

-Share your story of a women in your life who has battled or overcome heart disease.

I have a wonderful sister-in-law who has survived heart valve replacement just four years ago. But that's the last half of the story. Her heart was damaged close to 40 years ago when she bested Hodgkins disease and survived to carry her youngest baby, a boy, to full term, see all of her children grown, enjoy watching her grandchildren grow up to present her great-grandchildren. Her story reminds me of Luke 7:9 "I have not found so great faith" that that of my beloved SiL.

I have had this recipe for awhile, I make it for my parents probably once a month, or on any special ocassion and they LOVE it.

Ingredients

1 lb (500 g) extra lean ground turkey
1 cup (250 mL) panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) or regular dry breadcrumbs
1 cup (250 mL) grated, peeled apple (about 1 apple)
2 eggs
1 tsp (5 mL) onion powder
½ tsp (2 mL) black pepper
Directions

Preheat the oven to 400º F (200º C) cover a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl combine all the ingredients and mix very well. Using an ice cream scoop, form the mixture into balls, smaller than a golf ball. Make 15 meatballs.

Place the meatballs on the cookie sheet and cook for 15 minutes. Flip them over and cook for an additional 10 minutes and until they are no longer pink inside.
Serve immediately.

Serves: Typically 4-5 people (3 meatballs per person)
